Some 15 million light-years from earth in constellation Hydra.    It is also known as the Southern Pinwheel.  It is one of the closest and brightest barred spiral galaxies in the sky.  Discovered some 250 years ago, it is a prominent member of a group of galaxies that include Centaurus A and NGC 5253.  M83 has recorded several bright supernova, also M83 is not unlike our own hood, the Milky Way!
