Not far from both M42 & M43 is M78, indeed it is considered
the Orion molecular cloud complex. This nebula is approx. 1350 light-years from earth. The bluish tint almost 5 light-years across is due to hot, young stars.
We think we can do better but until
this is a good beginning. The two bright stars, HD 38563A and HD 38563B, are the main engines
behind M78. The nebula is home to more stars, this includes a
collection of approx 45 low-mass young stars, these are less than 10 million years
This is one of my favorite images. There is just something about this nebula that is the essense of deep sky for me .
