M64

NGC4826
Spiral Galaxy
Black Eye or Sleeping Beauty Galaxy
Constellation:  Coma Berenices
This galaxy has a lot of fathers, discovered by Edward Pigott in March 1779, then later that same year Apr by Johann E. Bode.  Then our guy (Messier) came along in 1780 to name it M64.
Just when you think you’ve pretty well figured out these guy, the cosmos throw you a curve ball.  The interstellar gas in the outer regions rotate in the opposite direction from the gas and stars in the inner regions.  Radius of the inner region is only about 3,000 light-years, while the outer region extends out another 40,000 light-years.
The general belief is that two galaxies collided and then merged with the strange internal motions.  Who says the good Lord doesn’t have a sense of humor!
