The Beehive Cluster is one of the nearest open clusters to our Solar
System. It was one of the first objects that Gallileo studied it with
his telescope. This cluster contains red giants and white
which represent later stages of stellar evolution, along with main
sequence stars of spectral classes A,F,G,K and M. There is no
consensus on the cluster's distance, from 520-610 light years, and
approximately 600 million years old.
While not part of the Orion complex, we have it here to honor our bee
hives at school.
