M47
NGC 2422

Constellation: Puppis
Open Cluster
If you’ve looked at M46, then this is its next door neighbor.  M47 was discovered much earlier than its larger cousin.  Giovanni Hodierna first put a tag on this bad boy before 1654.  Messier then rediscovered  it in the same year 1771 as M46.  This cluster is much closer to us at 1600 light-years, and is much younger at 78 million years.  This little guy only has about 50 stars in its cluster.  Astronomers describe  this one as a coarse cluster.
